When and why should I commission for services?

Assessments should take place as soon as a visual challenges or impairment is suspected. There is a variety of reasons for vision loss and, they can develop suddenly at any age. Assessment is recommended to be updated every three years as well.

There are several different pieces of legislation protecting the education of those with disabilities, but the federal Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1990 states that children with all levels of visual impairments have the right to early intervention/instruction provided by highly trained and qualified teachers for the visually impaired. These children have the right to a functional vision evaluation and learning media assessment done by a qualified teacher for the visually impaired. It goes on to state that instruction in braille must be provided unless it is determined braille is not appropriate.

Federal laws prohibit employment discrimination. These laws protect many individuals including those who have disabilities. Due to this, employers will want to make sure that reasonable workplace accommodations are being offered and supported by everyone in the workplace.
